As the brains of generator sets, the ATS control system will signal the genertor to start when the utility power failures. Once the generator has reached operating speeds with correct frequency and voltage levels the transfer switch will disconnect the utility source and connect the generator.

They are similar to the thermostat in your house. Instead of monitoring temperature, an automatic transfer switch monitors utility power.

When the power goes out, the automatic transfer switch tells the generator to start.
